Lorient
Lorient, a city with a population of about 60 000 inhabitants, is located on the south coast of Brittany between the Blavet and Scorff rivers and just off the highway N165-E60.
During the last world war, the city was almost destroyed by allied bombing in attempts to blow the German U-boat bases and their supply lines. That is why today’s Lorient reflects an architectural style of the 1950s. Nowadays the second world war submarine base remains an attraction along with beautiful offshore islands, such as Groix, and the "Cité de la Voile" (our photo) that welcomes very famous navigators. Close to it the fishing port which is amongst the largest in France and the Ifremer station.
Lorient is also well known because of its annual Interceltique music festival which takes place during the first two weeks of August. The festival draws around 5000 artists from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Brittany and Galicia and 800 000 people coming from all over Europe.
